The shovelnose ray (Glaucostegus typus), commonly known as the giant shovelnose ray or shovelnose guitarfish, is a magnificent cartilaginous fish representing an evolutionary bridge between sharks and true rays. Possessing a distinctive wedge-shaped, triangular disc that tapers into a long, blunt snout, this species features a flattened anterior body merged seamlessly with pectoral fins, while its posterior half resembles the muscular, hydrodynamic torso of a shark. It bears two prominent, upright dorsal fins set well behind the pelvic fins, and a robust caudal fin lacking the distinct lower lobe found in typical pelagic sharks. The dorsal surface ranges from pale sandy yellowish-brown to olive-grey, frequently speckled with faint, subtle lighter spots, providing pristine camouflage against benthic substrate.
