Moyer's dragonet (Synchiropus moyeri) is an exquisite, cryptically patterned benthic fish belonging to the family Callionymidae. Reaching just a few centimetres in length, this miniature marvel features a stocky, scaleless body coated in a thick layer of protective, foul-tasting mucus. Its coloration is a masterclass in camouflage, displaying intricate mottling of creamy white, beige, reddish-brown, and subtle hints of orange or pink, which mimic the surrounding sand, coralline algae, and broken rubble perfectly. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced; mature males possess a remarkably tall, sail-like first dorsal fin adorned with striking ocelli (eye spots) and dark wavy bands, which they erect during territorial and courtship displays. Their large, high-set eyes move independently like those of a chameleon, constantly scanning the environment for minuscule prey and lurking predators.
Native to the tropical and subtropical waters of the western Pacific Ocean, Moyer's dragonet is closely associated with sheltered reef slopes, rubble patches, and coastal sand plains. Rather than swimming freely through the water column, it hops and skitters across the seabed using its broad, fan-like pelvic fins as modified limbs. Dragonets are territorial, bottom-dwelling creatures that spend their daylight hours actively foraging among benthic debris. Although solitary for much of the day, males maintain territories encompassing the home ranges of several females. As dusk falls, their behaviour shifts from cryptic foraging to energetic social interaction, culminating in rapid, synchronised pelagic spawning ascents just above the substrate before darting back into the safety of the reef.

These small, colourful fish are typically observed individually or in small, loose aggregations, suggesting a generally solitary or semi-social existence rather than schooling. They spend much of their time foraging for small invertebrates on sandy or rubble substrates. Reproduction in Synchiropus species, including Moyer's Dragonet, is typically oviparous, involving broadcast spawning. While specific detailed studies on the precise spawning season for S. moyeri are limited, dragonets generally engage in a characteristic courtship display, often involving the male and female rising in the water column before releasing eggs and sperm simultaneously.
