The coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae) is a legendary lobe-finned fish, famously regarded as a 'living fossil' after its sensational rediscovery in 1938 disproved the belief that its lineage vanished during the Cretaceous period. Possessing an archaic anatomy distinct from modern teleost fish, the coelacanth exhibits a heavy, robust body cloaked in thick, armour-like cosmoid scales. Its most striking physical features are its eight fleshy, paddle-like lobed fins, which are supported by internal bony structures and move in an alternating, quadrupedal rhythm reminiscent of four-legged land vertebrates. The fish is characterised by a unique three-lobed diphycercal caudal fin, an unsegmented notochord filled with oil instead of a bony vertebral column, and a deep indigo-blue coloration flecked with irregular white and silvery spots that form unique camouflage patterns against volcanic rock walls.

Coelacanths (Latimeria chalumnae) exhibit a generally solitary or small-group social behaviour, typically found resting in caves or crevices during the day at depths between 100-700 metres, emerging at night to feed. They are live-bearing, with internal fertilisation, showcasing ovoviviparous reproduction. The females retain fertilised eggs within their bodies, where embryos develop, nourished by a large yolk sac, before being born as fully formed, miniature adults. There is no distinct breeding season reported; rather, the process seems continuous, although infrequent. Gestation is exceptionally long, estimated to be up to five years, and females produce a small litter size, typically between five and twenty-nine pups. The pups are born at a significant size, around 30-40 cm, indicating substantial pre-birth development. Sexual maturity is reached very late, potentially between 40 and 69 years of age, reflecting their slow life history.
