What is a liveaboard?

A liveaboard is a small dive-focused cruise vessel where you sleep, eat, and dive from the same boat for typically 5–10 nights, with 3–4 guided dives per day.

A liveaboard is a purpose-built dive vessel that doubles as your floating hotel for the entire trip. You sleep, eat, and dive directly from the boat — no daily transfers from a hotel, no surface intervals stuck in traffic, and no missed sites because they were too far from shore. While day-boat operations run a single morning and afternoon dive from a fixed marina, a liveaboard moves overnight to the next remote reef, drops anchor in a sheltered bay, and has you in the water before breakfast.

The format dates back to the 1970s when small groups of divers chartered fishing boats to reach the offshore Australian Coral Sea and the Egyptian Brothers Islands. Today, the modern liveaboard fleet ranges from rustic 8-guest sailing yachts to 32-guest steel-hulled motor vessels with hot tubs, full nitrox membrane systems and Starlink Wi-Fi. Cabins are typically en-suite, climate-controlled, and come in twin, double, or master configurations across multiple decks.

A standard week runs 7 nights with 18–24 boat dives, all meals, snacks, soft drinks and crew service included in the published price. The reason this format dominates the world's best diving is simple: the most spectacular dive sites on Earth — Galápagos, Raja Ampat, the Brothers Islands, Cocos, Socorro, Tubbataha — are simply too far from any port to reach by day boat. Liveaboards exist because there is no other way to dive these places.
