If you plan to dive three or more times a day and want offshore sites, yes. Priced per dive, a liveaboard is usually cheaper than a resort once you add up dive packages, hotel and transfers.
The sticker price of a liveaboard looks high next to a hotel room, but the comparison is misleading because a liveaboard price bundles accommodation, all meals, snacks, soft drinks, three to four guided dives a day, tanks, weights and crew service. A resort week usually charges those separately.
Run the maths per dive
A typical 7-night liveaboard with 20 to 22 dives at $2,200 works out at roughly $100 per dive, everything in. A dive resort at $150 a night plus a 10-dive package at $60 a dive plus meals and transfers lands in a very similar place — but with half the dives and a fixed set of sites reachable within an hour of the marina.
The real value is access
Wolf and Darwin, the Brothers, Cocos, Tubbataha, Raja Ampat's Misool region and the outer Maldivian atolls are not reachable by day boat. If those sites are on your list, a liveaboard is not the more expensive option, it is the only option.
Where a resort wins: travelling with non-divers, wanting flexible dive days, needing solid Wi-Fi for work, having limited mobility, or being genuinely unsure about seasickness. Plenty of divers do both — a few resort days either side of a liveaboard week is a very popular combination.
