Itineraries are built around completely different priorities
A liveaboard's schedule is dictated by tides, currents, marine life patterns, and dive site logistics. The boat moves at night to be on station for the morning dive. A cruise ship's itinerary is built around port towns, shopping, shore excursions, and entertainment schedules — diving is a one-off shore-excursion add-on at a single shallow site, often with rented gear and 20+ divers per guide.
Dive operations are night and day
Liveaboards have a dedicated dive deck with personal stations, tank racks, rinse tanks, dedicated camera tables, and trained dive guides who lead small groups (usually 4-6 divers per guide). Cruise ships subcontract diving to a port operator who has no idea who you are, what your certification level is, or what your in-water history looks like.
Schedule and freedom are different too
On a liveaboard, you eat when divers eat — buffet breakfast at 7am, lunch after dive 2, dinner after dive 4. On a cruise ship, dinner is at 6pm or 8:30pm in a fixed dining room and there's a dress code. Liveaboards are barefoot and casual. Cruise ships have formal nights.
Price comparison is misleading
A 7-night Caribbean cruise can cost $700, but if you actually want to dive 3-4 times a day at the world's best sites, the cruise ship cannot deliver. A 7-night liveaboard at $3,000 includes 24 dives, all gear logistics, all meals, expert guides, and access to sites no cruise ship will ever reach.
