How many dives per day on a liveaboard?

Most operators run 3–4 day dives plus optional night dives. A 7-night trip delivers 18–28 dives.

The standard liveaboard schedule is built around four dive slots per day: a sunrise dive before breakfast, a mid-morning dive, an early-afternoon dive, and either a late-afternoon or night dive. Surface intervals of 90–120 minutes between dives keep your no-decompression limits comfortable, and most boats use Nitrox 32 to extend bottom times safely.

On a typical 7-night trip you can expect 18 to 24 boat dives. Expedition operators in the Galápagos, Cocos and Socorro often run a fixed four dives a day, pushing the count to 28 over a 10-night charter. Muck-diving boats in Indonesia's Lembeh Strait will sometimes squeeze in a fifth dive, while photographers love the chance to dive the same site at multiple light angles.

The first dive of the trip is usually a check-out dive in shallow water to test buoyancy, weighting and equipment. After that, dives are briefed in detail by the cruise director — site map, current direction, depth profile, time, and what marine life to expect. Most operators run guided groups of 4-6 divers per guide, and many allow experienced divers to buddy up and dive independently within set parameters.

If you're worried about over-diving, remember that nothing is mandatory. Skipping a dive to read on the sundeck, nap, or process photos is completely normal. Most divers find the rhythm settles into 3 dives a day plus the occasional fourth on standout sites. Your body, your computer, your call.
