Rino Phores is a notable dive site located off West Bay Point in Roatan, Honduras, within the protected waters of the Roatan Marine Park. It's recognized as part of a larger area also known as Texas or Salt Life Point, reflecting its position at the westernmost tip of Roatan. The site holds particular significance as it was named in honor of Rino Jackson, a revered local dive professional from West End, who was celebrated for his exceptional eyesight and passion for spotting macro life, especially nudibranchs. The underwater topography of Rino Phores features a expansive sand patch, which Rino Jackson was fond of exploring for its resident nudibranch populations. The reef itself begins at a depth of 6 to 9 meters (20-30 feet) and descends steeply, reaching depths of 36 meters (80 feet) and beyond. This dramatic drop-off forms part of a reef wall that extends along the point. The area's nutrient-rich, east-to-west currents contribute to the flourishing marine environment. Divers here can expect to encounter an abundance of diverse marine life. The site is known for its massive sea fans and giant barrel sponges, thriving due to the consistent currents. Schools of cubera snapper, horse-eye jacks, barracudas, and Creole wrasses are commonly observed. The sand patch is a prime location for spotting nudibranchs, honoring Rino Jackson's "magic eyes." Goldentail moray eels and giant anemones may also be found in the sandy sections. Roatan's waters maintain a comfortable temperature range of 27-31°C year-round, with good visibility, making marine encounters reliable. Given the presence of east-to-west currents, Rino Phores is ideal for drift diving, allowing divers to effortlessly glide along the reef. While it can be dived by various levels due to the reef starting at shallower depths, the currents require appropriate experience or guidance. The site is generally less frequented, offering a more tranquil diving experience away from crowds. Rino Phores is characterized by consistent east-to-west currents that feed the vibrant coral ecosystems and attract schools of pelagic fish. These currents make it an excellent location for drift dives, where divers can ride the flow along the reef wall. While not typically extreme, the currents can be strong, necessitating appropriate planning and experience for divers. Entry is usually from a boat, and divers should be prepared for a live boat pickup or to deploy a safety sausage for surface signaling. Thermoclines are generally not a significant concern, as water temperatures remain warm. Visibility is usually very good, ranging from 24-45 meters, but can be affected by weather during the rainy season. This site is suitable for intermediate to advanced divers comfortable with current, or guided beginner divers who can manage drift diving techniques.
