Why It Matters

The Right Neoprene Thickness

A properly fitting wetsuit is crucial for comfort and safety underwater. If it is too thin, you will freeze and the dive becomes miserable. If it is too thick, you will overheat on the surface and the extra buoyancy makes descending more difficult.

Choosing the right thickness depends not only on water temperature but also on individual factors such as body type, personal cold sensitivity, and planned dive duration.

On a liveaboard you dive four or five times a day, so the suit that felt fine on a single holiday dive can leave you shivering by the third day. Water conducts heat about 25 times faster than air, which is why even 28°C tropical water slowly drains warmth over a 60-minute dive. Think in terms of the whole week rather than one dive, and factor in wind on the deck, air conditioning in the salon and early morning entries. A 3mm full suit plus a hooded vest is often the most flexible answer for warm destinations, while 5mm with hood, gloves and boots covers most temperate liveaboard itineraries.

The numbers assume a 50 to 60 minute dive, moderate activity and a suit that actually fits; repetitive liveaboard days, thermoclines and strong currents all push you one step warmer. Pick the band that matches the coldest water on your itinerary, not the average.

Ideal for warm dive destinations like the Caribbean, Maldives, or Red Sea in summer. Provides minimal thermal protection but shields against sunburn and minor abrasions.

Temperate Waters

20–24°C (68–75°F)

The most versatile choice for most dive destinations worldwide. Suitable for the Mediterranean, subtropical regions, and warmer seasons in temperate zones.

7mm

Cold Waters

10–20°C (50–68°F)

For colder waters like Northern Europe, Canada, or deeper dives. Often combined with a hood, gloves, and booties for complete thermal protection.

Layering a thin vest or hooded top under your suit adds warmth without buying a second wetsuit, and a snug fit matters far more than raw neoprene thickness.
