The St. Johns reefs, a pristine collection of dive sites in Egypt's southern Red Sea, offer a remote diving experience characterized by dramatic drop-offs, vibrant hard and soft coral gardens, and numerous swim-throughs. This itinerary explores these offshore reefs, renowned for frequent pelagic encounters, including various shark species like oceanic whitetips and hammerheads, alongside large schools of reef fish. Expect generally calm conditions and excellent visibility throughout the year, making it suitable for experienced divers seeking prolific marine life and stunning underwater topography. The trip focuses on maximizing dives at these isolated reef systems, providing an immersive exploration of a truly wild Red Sea environment.
Board the vessel at Port Ghalib (near Marsa Alam). Following a welcome briefing and equipment setup, the boat departs for an overnight journey south into the Red Sea.
The first dives of the trip take place around Fury Shoal. This area provides a great opportunity for check dives on pristine, colorful coral gardens and exciting swim-throughs.
Arrive at the remote St. Johns area. Dives often focus on the famous St. Johns Caves, a network of shallow, light-filled caverns and tunnels teeming with reef fish.
Explore the dramatic drop-offs of St. Johns at sites like Habili Ali or Habili Gafaar. These deep walls are covered in soft corals and offer chances to spot grey reef sharks, barracuda, and Napoleon wrasse.
Enjoy a final dive in the St. Johns area, perhaps at a site like Dangerous Reef, before the boat begins heading north. The vessel often moors at Sataya, also known as Dolphin Reef, for the night.
Spend the morning at Sataya, with opportunities to snorkel or dive with the resident spinner dolphins in the lagoon. The journey may continue to Marsa Shouna, a bay known for its large sea turtles and potential dugong sightings.
The last day of diving features the world-famous Elphinstone Reef. Divers can explore its steep walls and plateaus, which are prime locations for encountering oceanic whitetip sharks before the boat returns to port in the evening.
After enjoying a final breakfast on board, you will disembark in Port Ghalib for your onward journey.
