Zalophus californianus
California sea lions are charismatic and playful marine mammals commonly encountered along the Pacific coast of North America. Known for their intelligence and acrobatic underwater behaviour, they are a favourite among divers and snorkellers, especially in the Sea of Cortez where they gather in large colonies on rocky islets.
Sea lions are incredibly playful and love to interact with divers. Stay relaxed and let them approach. They often mirror your movements, spinning, blowing bubbles, and making eye contact. Avoid touching or chasing them.
