Will there be other beginners on board?

Mainstream tropical destinations attract mixed-level groups. Expedition destinations attract experienced divers only.

Whether you'll be the only beginner on board depends almost entirely on the destination and the operator's marketing.

Mainstream tropical destinations — Maldives, northern Red Sea, Bahamas, Cayman, Caribbean — attract a wide mix of experience levels. On a typical 18-guest Maldives trip you'll find a couple of newly-certified Open Water divers, a handful of intermediates with 50–200 dives, several experienced 500+ dive enthusiasts, and one or two divemasters or instructors. Groups split naturally by ability on most sites. Briefings are pitched to the middle and guides quietly buddy weaker divers with stronger ones.

Family-oriented and entry-level operators specifically market to beginners and run their itineraries accordingly. Look for operators advertising 'beginner-friendly,' 'no current,' 'Open Water welcome,' or 'Discover Scuba available.' These boats run small groups, slower-paced briefings, and sites under 18m. They're not exciting for advanced divers, but they're a great place to learn.

Photography-focused trips, technical/wreck trips, and expedition trips skew advanced. On a Truk Lagoon wreck trip, every diver on board will have 200+ dives and probably a tech certification. On a Galápagos trip, the average diver has 300+ dives. As a beginner you'd struggle socially as well as technically.
