Liveaboard diving FAQ — Can I fly the day after my last dive?

Can I fly the day after my last dive?

Travel Logistics & Pre-Trip Prep

DAN recommends 18 hours after a single dive and 24 hours after multi-day diving. Most liveaboards end diving the day before disembarkation to allow this.

DAN (Divers Alert Network) and major training agencies recommend the following pre-flight surface intervals: 12 hours after a single no-decompression dive, 18 hours after multiple no-deco dives in a single day, and 24 hours after multi-day repetitive diving. Decompression dives require longer intervals (typically 24+ hours minimum).

Because most liveaboard trips involve 5-7 days of repetitive diving with 3-4 dives per day, the standard guidance is: no flying within 24 hours of your last dive. This is non-negotiable for safety.

Most reputable liveaboard operators build this into the schedule

The standard format is: dive normally Saturday through Friday, last dive ends by Friday afternoon at the latest, optional non-diving activities Friday evening (sunset cruise, beach BBQ), boat returns to port Friday night or Saturday morning, disembarkation 8-9am Saturday, fly out Saturday afternoon or evening.

If you have an early-morning flight on Saturday, you'll need to skip the last dive day or two to be safe. Tell the operator in advance and they'll plan accordingly. Some operators offer a 'no-fly' last day specifically for divers with early Saturday departures.

Practical tips: book your return flight for Saturday afternoon at the earliest, build in time for the airport transfer (1-2 hours in most destinations), and pad your schedule by an extra day if you're connecting to high-altitude destinations (Bogotá, Mexico City, La Paz). Going to altitude after diving is more dangerous than flying because the pressure drop is sustained.
