Nitrox is not legally required to board a liveaboard
You can dive an entire week on standard air. But if you ask any cruise director, divemaster, or experienced liveaboard diver, they'll tell you the same thing: get Nitrox certified before your first liveaboard.
The reason is simple
On a liveaboard you're doing 3-4 dives a day, every day, for 6–10 days. Your body absorbs nitrogen on every dive and offgasses it during surface intervals. Standard air (21% oxygen, 79% nitrogen) is fine for 1–2 dives a day, but stack 4 air dives a day for a week and your no-decompression limits get tight. You end up doing very short dives by day 4, and many divers feel fatigued and headachy.
Nitrox 32 (32% oxygen, 68% nitrogen) extends your bottom time on every dive, often by 50% or more, while reducing nitrogen loading. Nitrox 36 goes further but limits maximum depth. The certification is a 1-day course (one classroom session, two confined-water exercises, no open-water dives required) and costs around €150–€250 from any major training agency.
Most modern liveaboards have a Nitrox membrane filling system on board
The cost is typically $100–$250 per week for unlimited fills, sometimes included free with luxury operators. Each tank is analyzed before the dive — you log the oxygen percentage, sign for the tank, and set your dive computer accordingly.
There is one situation where Nitrox is non-negotiable: expedition diving in Galápagos, Cocos, and Socorro. These trips run four dives a day at 25–30m for a full week. Without Nitrox you'll burn through your no-decompression limits by mid-trip and miss half the diving. Operators in these destinations either require Nitrox certification or strongly recommend completing the course before arrival.
Bottom line: get Nitrox before your first serious liveaboard trip
