Match the month to the marine life: Maldives December–April, Galápagos June–November for whale sharks, Raja Ampat November–March, Egypt year-round, Socorro November–May.
Season is the single biggest driver of what you will actually see, and the good news is that somewhere in the world is always in peak season.
December to April: the Maldives is at its calmest and clearest during the northeast monsoon, Raja Ampat is in its main season, Komodo's manta activity peaks, and the Caribbean is dry and settled. This is the classic northern-winter escape window.
May to August: Egypt's offshore reefs — the Brothers, Daedalus, Elphinstone — come into their own with oceanic whitetips and hammerheads, Palau and Micronesia are excellent, and Galápagos begins its whale-shark season in June.
September to November: Galápagos peaks with whale sharks at Darwin, Cocos is in season, French Polynesia's Fakarava shark walls are at their most dramatic, and Indonesia's Banda Sea crossings run.
