About Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland on the south side of Ginger Island is often described as the prettiest coral dive in the British Virgin Islands. The reef slopes gently from about 12 to 27 meters and is named for its fantastical landscape of giant mushroom-shaped coral heads, sea fans and swaying soft corals. The hard corals here are unusually healthy, and the site is home to big schools of creole wrasse, snapper and grunts, with turtles, eagle rays and reef sharks passing by. Because it sits on the exposed southern side of the island, the site needs reasonably calm weather, which keeps diver numbers low and the reef in great condition. Photographers love the wide-angle scenery and the clear blue water. Alice in Wonderland is a highlight of any BVI liveaboard week when conditions allow.

The site can have some swell and moderate current because of its exposed position, and visibility is typically 20 to 30 meters. Divers should be comfortable with a live boat pick-up. Dive profiles here run between roughly 12 and 27 metres, so plan your gas and no-decompression limits around the deeper part of the site. It is usually briefed as a dive for intermediate divers. The site is reached by liveaboard, so entries are run from the tender or straight off the back deck. Tide, wind and season all shift the picture from day to day, so the crew's briefing on the boat always overrides any general description.
