Open Circuit vs Rebreather: When to Move to a CCR

The choice between open-circuit scuba and a closed-circuit rebreather (CCR) is one of the biggest equipment commitments in diving. Open circuit — the standard scuba you learned with — exhausts your breath into the water as bubbles. A rebreather scrubs CO2 from your exhaled gas, adds a small amount of oxygen and recirculates it, dramatically extending dive time and silencing the diver. CCRs unlock dive profiles that are simply impossible on open circuit, but they come with significant costs: €8,000–€15,000 for the unit, weeks of training, hours of pre-dive setup and elevated risk if anything goes wrong.

Rebreathers are not an upgrade for casual diving. They make sense in three specific scenarios:

**1. Long bottom times at depth**: A 60-minute dive at 60 m on open-circuit trimix requires 4 stages and meticulous gas planning. The same dive on a CCR uses one diluent fill and a fraction of oxygen.

**2. Wildlife photography**: No bubbles means animals (sharks, whales, mantas) approach to within touching distance. National Geographic photographers almost universally use CCR.

**3. Cave diving**: Reduced gas consumption means dives previously requiring 6 stage bottles can be done with one diluent and one oxygen tank, dramatically expanding penetration distances.

CCR training is **substantial**: a typical Mod 1 (recreational CCR) course is 6–8 days of theory and dives, costing €2,500–€3,500. Most agencies require 50+ hours of CCR experience before moving to Mod 2 (deeper, multi-gas). Total investment to be a competent trimix CCR diver: 200+ hours, €5,000+ in training alone.

The learning curve never really ends. CCR divers do **bailout drills** every dive (switching to open-circuit emergency gas), monitor PO2 readings continuously, perform pre-breathe checks, calibrate sensors monthly and replace consumables (sorb, sensors, batteries) regularly. Many divers describe CCR as 'a second job.'

Open circuit failures are mostly **obvious**: regulator free-flow, broken hose, out of gas. Solutions are taught in basic courses (alternate air source, controlled emergency ascent).
