Flatworms belong to the phylum Platyhelminthes, an ancient group of unsegmented, soft-bodied bilateral invertebrates. Lacking an internal body cavity (coelom), as well as specialised circulatory and respiratory organs, these animals are restricted to flattened or minute body shapes. This structure allows oxygen and nutrients to pass directly through their tissues via simple diffusion. In marine environments, free-living species belong predominantly to the class Turbellaria and order Polycladida, capturing the attention of underwater observers with their vibrant colours and surprising agility.
One of the most distinctive marine species is the Persian carpet flatworm (Pseudobiceros bedfordi), which grows to lengths between 8 and 10 centimetres. This flatworm features an intricate colouration pattern consisting of a brown to black background overlaid with thousands of bright yellow spots and pink transverse lines. Its underside is pale pink, and the outer edges of its body are undulating and ruffled. At the front end, a pair of erect pseudotentacles formed from folds of the anterior mantle serve as sensory organs.
Unlike many slow-moving benthic invertebrates, free-living marine flatworms are fast-moving predators capable of swimming through the water column. By rhythmically undulating their thin, ruffled body margins, flatworms can launch off the substrate and perform graceful swimming displays. Distinctive colouration patterns allow individual flatworms to recognise members of their own species, preventing cross-species mating in dense, biodiverse reef habitats.

Most marine species are nocturnal or crepuscular predators, using chemoreception to locate food, and generally avoid direct sunlight. Reproduction in flatworms is remarkably diverse, but many marine species are hermaphroditic, possessing both male and female reproductive organs. Internal fertilisation is common, often involving traumatic insemination where a flatworm pierces its partner's body wall to inject sperm. Following fertilisation, flatworms typically lay fertilised eggs in clutches, often encased in a protective capsule or laid in gelatinous strings attached to the substrate, making them oviparous. There is no distinct breeding season for many species, with reproduction occurring throughout the year in suitable conditions. Development is often direct, meaning the juveniles hatch as miniature versions of the adults, though some species exhibit larval stages. Maturity is generally reached within weeks to months, depending on species and environmental factors.
