Minimum certification: what you really need
Most liveaboards require an Open Water certification with at least 20–30 logged dives. Some advanced destinations (Galápagos, Socorro, Cocos) require Advanced Open Water + 50–100 dives due to current and depth. Always check the operator's minimum — it's non-negotiable.
Best beginner-friendly destinations
• Maldives (Central Atolls) — calm, warm, excellent visibility, gentle drifts
• Red Sea (Northern Wrecks & Reefs) — short flights from Europe, world-class reefs at 5–18 m
• Belize / Bahamas — reef-focused, mostly mild current, English-speaking crews
• Indonesia (Komodo north / Bali) — choose calm itineraries, avoid the southern current sites for trip one
What your first liveaboard day looks like
Wake at 6:30, light breakfast, briefing at 7:00, first dive 7:30. Surface interval, full breakfast, dive two around 11:00. Lunch, nap, dive three at 15:00. Sunset, dinner, optional night dive. Three to four dives a day is normal. It's intense — but every dive is from the back of the boat, no shore entries, no schlepping gear.
What to pack as a beginner
• Logbook + certification card (digital is fine on most boats)
• Your own mask — rentals rarely fit perfectly
• Sea-sickness medication for the first 48 h (Stugeron, Bonine)
• Reef-safe sunscreen, rashguard, two swimsuits
• Cash for tips ($80–$150 per guest for the week)
Honest expectations
You will be tired. You will get water in your mask. You may skip a dive — that's normal and the crew expects it. Eat well, sleep well, listen to briefings, and don't try to keep up with the divemaster. The week is yours, not a competition.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many dives do I need before a liveaboard?
Most boats accept Open Water divers with 20–30 logged dives. Advanced destinations like Galápagos require 50–100 dives + Advanced Open Water.
Will I be the slowest diver on the boat?
Probably not — most liveaboards mix experience levels and assign guides accordingly. Tell the crew you are new and they will pair you with a patient buddy.
What if I get seasick?
Take medication preventively for the first 48 hours. Most people adapt by day three. Choose itineraries with sheltered overnight anchorages for your first trip.
Is it cheaper than land-based diving?
Per dive, often yes — 3–4 dives daily, all-inclusive food and accommodation. Per week total, it's usually similar to a dive resort but with far more diving.
