The king mackerel (Scomberomorus cavalla), also known as the kingfish or carite lucio, is a fast-swimming epipelagic and neritic fish species inhabiting the warm-temperate and subtropical waters of the western Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Characterised by an elongated, torpedo-shaped body strongly compressed from side to side, this species displays an iron-grey or dark olive back with blue and green iridescent tones, fading to silvery flanks and a pale white belly. The entire body is covered in minute, loosely attached scales, giving it a sleek appearance as it moves through coastal waters.
Divers can distinguish the king mackerel from similar species, such as the Atlantic Spanish mackerel and cero mackerel, by examining its lateral line and dorsal fin. The king mackerel's lateral line starts high near the shoulder before taking an abrupt downward plunge at mid-body, below the second dorsal fin, before continuing as a wavy line towards the tail. Furthermore, its first spiny dorsal fin lacks any dark black patch and is entirely colourless; this fin, along with the pelvic fins, is typically folded flat into specialised body grooves during active swimming to reduce hydrodynamic drag.

King mackerel, Scomberomorus cavalla, are primarily pelagic, migratory predators, often found in schools, particularly during their seasonal movements along coastal waters of the western Atlantic. While they can be solitary, they frequently exhibit schooling behaviour, especially when feeding or migrating, contributing to their highly active lifestyle. Reproduction in King mackerel is characterised by broadcast spawning. Females release numerous pelagic eggs, which are fertilised externally by males. This protracted spawning season typically occurs from May through October in warmer waters, with peak activity observed during summer months. Individual females are capable of releasing hundreds of thousands to several million eggs over multiple spawning events within a season. The eggs and subsequent larvae are planktonic, drifting with currents. Larval development is relatively rapid, with juveniles growing quickly to join the adult population. Sexual maturity is generally reached by age two or three, at a length of approximately 50-80 cm.
