
Cornetfish, belonging to the family Fistulariidae, are among the most distinctively shaped teleost fish encountered on coral reefs. Characterised by an exceptionally elongated, slender, tubular body, they possess a long, flattened snout that functions much like a drinking straw. Unlike trumpetfish, cornetfish are distinguished by a long, whip-like filament that extends from the centre of their forked caudal fin. Their coloration is typically a subtle, cryptic greenish-brown, silver, or grey on the dorsal surface with a pale underside, often overlaid with faint neon-blue spots or bars that can pulse and shift depending on the animal's mood and hunting state. Their tiny dorsal and anal fins are positioned far back near the tail, leaving the rest of the body rigid and needle-like in profile. Widespread throughout tropical and subtropical marine waters, cornetfish—most notably the bluespotted cornetfish (Fistularia commersonii) and the red cornetfish (Fistularia petimba)—inhabit shallow coastal waters, coral reefs, rocky shoals, and seagrass meadows. They are agile yet patient stalkers, employing stealth to blend into the surrounding water column. Rather than swimming rapidly over open areas, they glide with minimal fin movement, occasionally hovering motionless to align their slender bodies with the line of sight of unsuspecting prey. Some species have also demonstrated remarkable ecological adaptability, notably F. commersonii, which entered the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal as a Lessepsian migrant and quickly became a prominent apex predator of small coastal fishes across the basin. Cornetfish typically exhibit a solitary or small-group social behaviour, often found lurking among seagrass beds, coral reefs, or rocky substrates, where their elongated bodies and cryptic colouration provide excellent camouflage. They are primarily diurnal hunters, ambushing small fishes and crustaceans with a sudden, rapid strike. Regarding reproduction, Cornetfish are oviparous, releasing eggs directly into the water column. While a specific, well-documented mating season is not universally defined across all species, spawning generally occurs during warmer periods. Females produce pelagic eggs that drift before hatching into larval stages. These larvae are also pelagic, developing in the open ocean before settling into coastal habitats as juveniles. The precise clutch size and incubation period are not consistently documented for all Fistularia species but are generally thought to be typical for marine broadcast spawners. Cornetfish reach sexual maturity at varying lengths, depending on the species and environmental conditions. For scuba divers, encountering a cornetfish is a masterclass in reef camouflage and opportunistic predation. These fish frequently use large herbivorous or non-threatening species, such as parrotfish, groupers, or sea turtles, as living shields, swimming pressed against their flanks to slip past prey defences undetected. Observing a cornetfish snap open its tiny jaw with explosive vacuum force is an unforgettable sight. Their silvery, reflective flanks catch beams of sunlight filtering through the shallows, making them a captivating and curious subject for divers exploring rich reef systems around the world.
