As they mature, their bodies become more robust and compressed, developing intricate rainbow-like tapestries of emerald greens, electric blues, fiery pinks, and iridescent yellows. Terminal-phase males, often resulting from protogynous hermaphroditism where the dominant female transitions into a male, exhibit the most brilliant, high-contrast coloration and elongated dorsal fin rays. Ecologically, coris wrasses are vital, dynamic diurnal predators that frequent coral reefs, rocky shallows, and adjacent sandy expanses. They are celebrated for their active foraging behaviour, constantly cruising the substrate in search of hidden invertebrates. Many species, such as the clown coris (Coris aygula) or the yellowtail coris (Coris gaimard), possess remarkably powerful pharyngeal jaws and prominent, forward-pointing canine teeth adapted for crushing hard-shelled prey. Remarkably, coris wrasses are renowned for their ability to flip over heavy rubble, coral fragments, and small stones using their snouts to expose concealed prey. When dusk approaches or when threatened by apex predators, these fish exhibit a unique defensive behaviour by diving headfirst into loose sand, vigorously wriggling beneath the surface where they remain buried and hidden until daylight returns. Their inquisitive and restless nature means they are almost always on the move, frequently shadowing foraging goatfish, rays, or even diving fins to snap up any morsels disturbed in the silt.
