Because these fish travel at speed along outer reef slopes, sea mounts, and deep drop-offs, divers should position themselves with their backs toward the reef or pinnacle, avoiding mid-water chasing which quickly depletes air and drives the school away. Maintain neutral buoyancy and keep movements deliberate and calm to encourage the fish to complete close passes. For underwater photographers, photographing bonito presents a fast-action challenge; use natural light with a high shutter speed (1/250s or faster) to freeze motion, and avoid strong strobes that can cause intense backscatter or reflective blowout on their mirror-like flanks.
