Liveaboard diving FAQ — Is there space on board to edit photos and videos?

Is there space on board to edit photos and videos?

Photography & Videography

Yes — most boats have a salon with tables suitable for laptop editing. Premium photo boats have dedicated editing rooms with 4K monitors and color-calibrated lighting.

Editing space on liveaboards ranges from 'a corner of the dining table' to 'a dedicated photo studio with reference monitors.' Most modern boats fall somewhere in the middle: a salon with several tables and good lighting, multiple power outlets, and enough space to spread out a laptop, external drive and a coffee.

Where photographers actually edit: the salon is the most common space — quiet during dive hours, good A/C, big tables, plenty of outlets. The sundeck is great for casual reviewing of the day's shots. Cabins have a small desk on most boats but limited light and outlets.

Premium photo-focused vessels (some Indonesian operators, dedicated photo charters in Lembeh and Anilao, certain Aggressor and Master vessels) offer dedicated photo rooms with: 4K calibrated monitors for color-accurate editing, blackout shades to control ambient light, dedicated photo SSDs for archiving, multiple high-speed card readers, and sometimes a printer for 4x6 reference prints.

What you should bring for editing: a laptop with adequate processing power for your raw files (most modern Macbooks and decent Windows laptops handle 24-50MP raw files fine; video work demands more), at least 1-2TB of external SSD storage, headphones for video editing, a card reader rated for your camera's card type, and editing software pre-installed (Lightroom, Capture One, DaVinci Resolve all run offline).

Time management tip: don't try to edit while diving — the dive schedule is intense and you'll burn out. Most photographers do a quick cull and rough edit each evening, then save the deep editing for the flight home or the days after the trip. Cloud sync (Adobe Cloud, iCloud, Google Photos) for selects is great if Wi-Fi allows.
