Minimum ages
PADI Bubblemaker starts at 8 (pool only); Junior Open Water at 10 with depth limited to 12 m; full Open Water at 15. Most liveaboards accept certified juniors but check before booking — some technical or remote itineraries set higher minimums.
Best destinations for families
Calm waters with short crossings work best: northern Red Sea, Maldives Central Atolls, Belize, the Bahamas, and Komodo's southern itineraries (skip Banda Sea and Raja Ampat with young kids — long ocean crossings).
Boat selection
Look for: family/triple cabins, a daytime snorkel program, a shallow house reef, an indoor lounge for downtime, and an experienced crew used to children. Smaller boats (12–20 guests) tend to be more flexible than 30+ guest fleets.
Non-divers and snorkelers
Many liveaboards happily host non-divers at a discounted rate (often 60–70% of the diver price). Ask whether snorkelers can join the dive skiffs or only swim from the boat — it makes a big difference for a 10-year-old.
Practical tips
Bring kids' rashguards (sun and chafing), reef-safe sunscreen, motion sickness meds suitable for their age, snacks they actually like, and a tablet loaded with offline content for surface intervals. Brief them on boat safety on day one.
