Deep Dive Technique: Going Beyond 18m the Right Way

Many liveaboard sites have their best action between 25 and 40m — sharks at the Brothers, hammerheads at Daedalus, manta rays at Hanifaru. But deep means less time, more risk, and skills not all certified divers have practiced. Here's the realistic technique guide for safe deep diving, no tech qualification needed.

Why the 30m / 40m limits exist

Recreational limit is 40m (PADI/SSI/RAID). Below 40m: nitrogen narcosis worsens, gas consumption doubles, no-stop time crashes to under 5 min. The sweet spot for recreational big-animal diving is 28–35m — long enough to enjoy, shallow enough to stay safe.

Gas management: the rule of thirds

On any dive past 25m: 1/3 of your gas for descent + bottom time, 1/3 for ascent and safety stop, 1/3 reserve. If you start with 200 bar, turn the dive at 130 bar — not when the guide signals, when YOUR gauge says so. Honest air management is what keeps recreational divers alive.

Recognising and managing narcosis

Below 30m, almost everyone gets some narcosis (martini effect: like one drink per 10m). Symptoms: tunnel vision, slow reactions, false confidence, fixation on a single subject. Test yourself: do simple math (7×8?) at 30m. If you struggle, ascend 5m — narcosis reverses fast.

Ascent rate and safety stops

Maximum ascent rate: 9m/min (= 1m every 6.5 seconds). Always do a 3-minute safety stop at 5m. After deep dives, stay shallow on subsequent dives. Don't do reverse profiles (deep dive #2 after shallow #1) — your body off-gases differently.

When to call the dive

You call the dive — not the guide, not your buddy. Reasons to abort: narcosis, low gas, equalisation pain, anxiety, gear issue. There is zero shame in turning around. The ocean gives you another chance tomorrow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need nitrox for 30m+?

Not required, but extends bottom time significantly. EAN32 gives ~50% more no-stop time at 30m vs air.

What if my buddy goes too deep?

Signal up, turn, ascend. Don't follow them deeper. Back on the boat, talk to the dive guide.

Best gear for deep recreational diving?

Steel tank for negative trim, dive computer with conservatism settings, redundant gas (pony bottle) for solo or remote sites.

Liveaboards good for deep diving?

Egypt Brothers/Daedalus/Elphinstone, Cocos, Galápagos, Maldives outer atolls. All have walls and pinnacles dropping past 40m.

How fit do I need to be for deep diving?

Average fitness is fine, but obesity and cardiovascular issues raise risk significantly. Honest medical disclosure on the dive form is critical.
