
The velvet surgeonfish (Acanthurus nigricans), also widely recognised as the whitecheek or goldrim surgeonfish, is an exquisitely marked member of the surgeonfish family Acanthuridae. It features a deep, laterally compressed oval body cloaked in an intense, matte velvet-black to dark olive-brown hue that absorbs light underwater. This dramatic background provides a stark contrast to its vivid ornamentation: a bright, distinct white oval patch sits directly beneath each eye, while glowing yellow bands run along the bases of both the dorsal and anal fins, widening toward the rear. The caudal fin is largely white, marked by a bright yellow vertical band at the base of the caudal peduncle and trimmed with a delicate electric-blue outer margin. Like all acanthurids, it possesses a razor-sharp, modified spine on either side of the caudal peduncle, nestled within a yellow socket that serves as a conspicuous warning to rivals and predators. Ranging widely across the tropical Indo-Pacific, from the eastern coast of Africa through the central and eastern Pacific islands, the velvet surgeonfish occupies sunlit coral reefs and surge-swept reef flats. While often observed foraging alone or in loose pairs, it also joins multi-species herbivorous aggregations alongside parrotfish, rabbitfish, and other surgeonfish species. Within these groups, it exhibits alert, fastidious behaviour, continuously darting between coral heads and using its specialised comb-like teeth to crop fine filamentous algae. It is known to hybridise naturally with several close relatives, such as the powder blue surgeonfish (Acanthurus leucosternon) and Achilles tang (Acanthurus achilles), producing striking intermediate colour morphs in overlap zones. The Velvet Surgeonfish, Acanthurus nigricans, typically exhibits diurnal activity, foraging for algae on coral reefs during daylight hours. While often observed singly or in small aggregations, they may also form larger feeding schools, especially in areas with abundant food resources, which can aid in overcoming territorial fish that defend algal patches. Their reproductive strategy involves broadcast spawning. Females release pelagic eggs into the water column, which are then fertilised externally by males. This species is gonochoristic, with separate male and female individuals. While specific spawning seasons can vary regionally, many surgeonfish species, including the Velvet Surgeonfish, show lunar periodicity in their reproductive cycles. After fertilisation, the eggs develop into a distinctive pelagic larval stage known as a tholichthys, characterised by a deep, compressed body and armoured plates, before eventually settling and metamorphosing into juvenile fish that resemble the adults. Maturity is reached within a few years, allowing them to contribute to the next generation. For scuba divers and snorkelers, encountering a velvet surgeonfish offers a masterclass in reef dynamism and colour theory. Gliding gracefully above pristine hard coral structures, its rich, velvety silhouette and luminous yellow and blue accents stand out brilliantly against the backdrop of azure blue water and golden sunlight. Watching these fish diligently tend to the reef underscores their vital ecological function: by continuously pruning fast-growing turf algae, they prevent delicate coral polyps from being smothered, directly bolstering the resilience, health, and biodiversity of the entire marine ecosystem.
