Mainstream destinations have more flexibility
The Maldives runs year-round with dozens of vessels, so 3–4 months ahead is usually enough to get a good cabin on a good boat. Same for the Egyptian Red Sea northern routes, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, and most Caribbean destinations.
Last-minute deals do exist

Liveaboard destinations are often remote (Galápagos requires a Quito or Guayaquil connection, Socorro requires a Cabo flight), and waiting too long can double your airfare even if the boat still has space.
