The vessel is your hotel, your restaurant, your transport, and your dive base for the full duration of the trip. There are no hotel transfers, no hotel buffet, and no trying to remember which marina to be at by 7am.
Cabins on modern liveaboards are surprisingly comfortable
En-suite bathrooms with hot showers and flushing toilets are standard. Air conditioning is universal in tropical destinations. Beds are typically twins (convertible to a king on most boats) or doubles, with proper mattresses, fresh linens changed mid-week, and blackout curtains. Lower deck cabins tend to be smaller and quieter (less motion). Upper deck cabins are larger, with windows or balconies, and rock more in swell.
Overnight, the boat usually anchors in a protected bay or behind a reef. This dramatically reduces motion compared to crossings during the day. On most trips you'll sleep through the boat moving from one site to the next — the engines hum, you sleep, and you wake up at sunrise with a new reef outside your window.
Long open-ocean crossings (Galápagos to Wolf and Darwin, Costa Rica to Cocos, Cabo to Socorro) are the exception. These can take 20–36 hours and the boat will be in open swell the entire time. Operators time these crossings to overnight hours when possible, but bring motion sickness medication if you're prone.
There are no land excursions on a typical dive trip
Many itineraries include a single optional land visit — a beach BBQ, a snorkel-and-photo stop at an iconic island, or a brief town visit on the last morning — but the focus is overwhelmingly on diving. If you want a beach holiday with diving on the side, book a resort. If you want diving as the main event, sleep on the boat.
