Transfer logistics vary widely by destination
Most quality liveaboard operators include transfers from a designated meeting point to the boat in the per-person trip price, but the location and timing of that meeting point matters enormously.
How included transfers usually work
The operator publishes a meeting point, time, and contact person. You arrive at the meeting point on the designated day and time. The operator's representative meets you there with a sign or T-shirt with the boat's logo. Group transfer to the marina or seaplane terminal follows. From there it's a coach, taxi, speedboat, or seaplane to the vessel.
Meeting point types
Most commonly the meeting point is the embarkation airport's arrivals hall, a specific hotel lobby, or the marina itself. Sometimes a hotel pickup is offered for a small fee. Sometimes you must make your own way to the marina (rare, but happens with smaller charters).
Maldives speedboat or seaplane
Most Maldives liveaboards depart from Hulhumalé (a 15-minute speedboat ride from Malé airport) or from a remote atoll requiring a 30–60 minute seaplane transfer. Speedboat transfers are usually included; seaplane transfers cost $300–$500 per person each way and are sometimes included, sometimes extra. Confirm at booking. Seaplane luggage limit is typically 20kg per person — pack accordingly.
Egypt road transfers
Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh airports are 30–60 minutes from the marina. Operators provide a coach or van transfer that meets all major flights on the embarkation day. Most operators specify a window (e.g., 'arrival before 4pm Saturday') — flights outside this window may require a private taxi at your cost.
Indonesia transfers
Bali boats depart from Benoa, 20 minutes from Denpasar airport. Komodo trips from Labuan Bajo are direct from the small airport, 20-minute drive. Raja Ampat requires a domestic flight to Sorong followed by a 1-hour speedboat or 2-hour ferry transfer to Waisai.
Caribbean and Mexico
Direct port pickups from the airport, usually 30–90 minute drives. Most operators bundle this in.
Galápagos and Cocos
Galápagos requires a domestic flight from Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra or San Cristóbal — usually arranged separately by the guest, with the operator meeting you on arrival in Galápagos. Cocos requires a domestic flight to Puntarenas in Costa Rica plus a long road transfer to the marina.
Always confirm
The transfer details should be in your final pre-departure briefing email (sent 14–7 days before the trip). If you don't have it 7 days out, contact the operator. Have the boat's WhatsApp or sat-phone number on your phone before you fly.
