Arriving the day before is the most valuable travel decision you can make around a liveaboard. Boats depart on schedule whether or not you are on them, and there is no way for the vessel to collect you from an offshore site two days later.
The two things that go wrong are flight delays and delayed baggage
A missed connection to Malé, Hurghada, Sorong or Cabo can cost you the entire trip. Delayed dive luggage is more common and more fixable — but only if you have a day in port to rent replacement gear or receive the bag on the next inbound flight.
There is a comfort argument too
Long-haul travel plus a same-day boarding plus a 6am first dive is a rough combination, and jet lag makes the first two days of diving worse. A night in a hotel resets you.
