Compass basics: the only 3 things to remember
- Read on the line, not the dial. 2) Always swim away on a heading — never reverse-engineer where you are. 3) For an out-and-back: note heading out, add 180° for return. Practice on land first, in water second, on dive third.
Finding the liveaboard at the end of a dive
On non-drift dives, ascend on the anchor or mooring line — that's where the boat is. If you've drifted off, deploy SMB at safety stop and wait. Boats know to follow SMBs. Don't surface far from the boat without an SMB — boat traffic kills divers every year.
Square vs U-pattern routes
Most rec dives are out-and-back (U-pattern). For square patterns, time each leg — don't trust your compass alone, current pushes you off. For pinnacles and seamounts, swim around the entire structure once, then explore in detail.
