Travel bag: roller vs backpack vs duffel
Roller wheels are king for paved airports, but useless on sand. Wheeled duffels (e.g. ScubaPro Caravan, Mares Cruise) are the liveaboard standard — they roll on land, become carry-able when you reach the dock. Pure backpacks (Akona, Stahlsac) work for divers who travel light or to remote destinations with no pavement. Pure duffels are cheapest but wreck your back at airports.
How big? Match your kit + airline limits
Most major airlines allow 23 kg checked. A typical liveaboard kit (BCD + regs + wetsuit + fins + boots + mask + computer + small dry bag) weighs 14–18 kg. Add clothes and toiletries and you're at 22–24 kg. Buy a bag rated for 30 kg+ load (not just volume) — the seams matter more than the litres.
Mesh bag for the boat — non-negotiable
Liveaboards expect every diver to have a mesh bag for their gear. It drains, ventilates, lets crew identify your kit on a busy dive deck, and survives saltwater forever. Aim for 90L (fits BCD + wetsuit + fins + boots) with reinforced bottom. ScubaPro and DGX make excellent ones for $30–60. Bring it in your checked luggage, fold it inside your travel bag.
Dry bag: protect your camera, computer, electronics
On the skiff to a dive site, water comes over the bow constantly. A 10–20L roll-top dry bag (Sea to Summit, Pelican, Overboard) keeps your camera body, batteries, and dry clothes safe. Submersion-rated bags > splash-rated. For SLR housings and laptops, hard cases (Pelican 1500, Nanuk 935) are the only real protection.
What NOT to buy
Hard-shell suitcases: heavy, crack on belt drops, useless for irregular gear shapes. Cheap unbranded 'dive bags' from Amazon: zippers fail by trip 3. Bags without bottom feet: scrape and tear within 2 trips. Pure leather: rots in saltwater. Bright neon colours: fade in UV (but easy to spot on a baggage carousel — slight upside).
