Raja Ampat in West Papua holds the record for the highest marine biodiversity ever recorded in a single survey, making it the crown jewel of the Coral Triangle. The region's sheltered bays and limestone karst islands harbor over 1,500 fish species and 550 coral species in pristine, current-flushed waters. Divers encounter schools of bumphead parrotfish, wobbegong sharks resting under table corals, and manta rays gliding through cleaning stations. The reefs are extraordinarily healthy, with dense hard coral gardens, massive sea fans, and walls covered in tunicates and sponges. Walking sharks (epaulette sharks) can be spotted on night dives in the shallows, and the sheer density of fish life — from tiny pygmy seahorses to patrolling blacktip reef sharks — creates an underwater spectacle unlike anywhere else on earth.
