Characterised by an elongated, cylindrical, torpedo-like body, sennets possess an unmistakably hydrodynamic form built for sudden acceleration. Maintain neutral buoyancy and position yourself slightly beneath or parallel to the aggregation, as descending aggressively from directly above triggers an evasive response. Divers should avoid rapid fin kicks or erratic gestures; instead, drift along with the prevailing current and let the school envelope your field of view. While sennets possess sharp teeth, they are non-aggressive towards humans and present no danger when treated with respect. Underwater photographers will achieve the most striking compositions using a wide-angle or mid-range zoom lens under natural ambient light to capture the glistening metallic sheen of the entire school. In shallow, sunny conditions, avoid overpowering strobe light to prevent harsh hot spots on their reflective, silvery scales.

Encountering sennets is reliable year-round across their subtropical and tropical range, though specific seasonal windows provide optimal diving conditions. In the Florida Keys, sennets are regularly encountered year-round along shallow patch reefs and historical shipwrecks, with the calmest diving conditions stretching from May to August. In the wider Caribbean Sea, including destinations such as Curaçao, Bonaire, and the Bay Islands of Honduras, diving is phenomenal throughout the calendar year, though visiting between February and September avoids the peak Atlantic hurricane season and brings prime underwater visibility. Across the Gulf of Mexico, late spring through autumn brings peak water clarity on artificial reefs.

Habitat

Sennets inhabit shallow to moderate-depth inshore and neritic marine environments, typically found from the surface down to approximately 25 to 65 metres deep, though they most frequently frequent waters shallower than 20 metres. They demonstrate a strong affinity for shallow coral and rocky reefs, fringing reef slopes, patch reefs, expansive seagrass beds, and open sandy channels.
