
The salema (Sarpa salpa), also known as the salema porgy, goldline, or dreamfish, is an instantly recognizable sea bream defined by its radiant, shimmering coloration. Its body is moderately deep, elongated, and laterally compressed, bearing an oval silhouette that tapers cleanly toward a notched caudal fin. The most conspicuous feature is a series of ten to twelve brilliant longitudinal golden-yellow stripes that streak along its silvery-grey flanks from the gill cover to the tail base. The dorsal surface exhibits a soft greenish hue, while the ventral side remains a pristine metallic silver. The head features a blunt, rounded snout with small, specialized incisiform teeth, a striking golden eye encircled by a delicate dark ring, and a tiny, distinct black spot situated right at the base of the pectoral fin. Inhabiting the temperate and subtropical coastal waters of the eastern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, the salema is an intensely gregarious species. While juveniles form modest clusters, mature adults assemble into vast, synchronised schools numbering hundreds or even thousands of individuals. These aggregations drift cohesively over rocky reefs, macroalgae meadows, and expansive beds of seagrass, such as Posidonia oceanica. The species acts as a foundational herbivore within these coastal marine ecosystems, exerting strong grazing pressure that shapes the structure, composition, and health of algal and seagrass communities. As protandric hermaphrodites, many individuals start life as males before transitioning into females as they grow larger, spawning pelagically during the autumn and spring months depending on their geographic location. The Salema, Sarpa salpa, exhibits notable schooling behaviour, often forming large, dense aggregations that graze on seagrass beds and algae during daylight hours, making them primarily diurnal. They are known for their herbivorous diet, which is unusual among sparids. Regarding reproduction, Sarpa salpa is a protandrous hermaphrodite, meaning individuals mature first as males and later transition to females. Spawning typically occurs during the autumn and winter months in Mediterranean waters, with some variations depending on geographical location. They are oviparous, releasing eggs into the water column, where fertilisation is external. There is no parental care. The eggs are pelagic, developing into larvae that eventually settle and mature. Details on exact clutch size or specific incubation periods are not widely documented, but they are known to produce numerous small eggs. Juveniles are typically found in shallower, protected coastal waters before joining adult schools. Encountering a massive school of salema is one of the quintessential delights of temperate and Mediterranean diving. The sheer coordination of the shoal is mesmerizing to behold, with thousands of metallic bodies flashing gold in unison as they catch the sunbeams filtering through the surface swell. They move with an undulating, fluid grace, parting smoothly around divers before reforming into a dense, shimmering wall of silver and gold. For underwater naturalists and photographers, these encounters represent a classic display of schooling behaviour, illustrating the vibrant biodiversity of inshore rocky reefs and the critical importance of marine protected areas where these herbivorous shoals flourish undisturbed.
