Approaching a numbfish requires excellent neutral buoyancy and slow, measured fin kicks to avoid disturbing the delicate sand or silt substrate upon which they rest. Because numbfishes rely on remaining stationary and hidden, sudden movements or descending directly from above can cause them to bolt, kicking up a blinding cloud of sediment. Divers should maintain a respectful distance of at least one to two metres and refrain from touching or cornering the animal; whilst their electrical discharge is generally non-lethal to humans, a defensive shock of 14 to 37 volts can cause an unpleasant numbing sensation. For underwater photographers, positioning a camera close to the sand with wide-angle or macro lenses allows for stunning low-angle perspectives of their camouflaged eyes and ornate dorsal patterns. Utilising external strobes angled away from the sand helps prevent backscatter in shallow, sediment-rich environments.

Diet

Numbfishes are specialised benthic carnivores that feed primarily on small, soft-bodied invertebrates concealed within the substrate. Their staple diet consists of marine polychaete worms, sipunculids (peanut worms), small burrowing crustaceans such as amphipods and crabs, and occasionally juvenile benthic teleost fishes. To capture prey buried beneath the sand, the numbfish glides slowly over the bottom, utilising specialised electrosensory pores located on the underside of its snout to detect the minute bioelectric fields emitted by hidden animals.
