The marbled grouper (Dermatolepis inermis), also known by names such as the donkey fish, mutton hamlet, or rockhind, is a secretive predatory reef fish belonging to the family Serranidae. Native to the Western Atlantic Ocean, it is a prized sight for scuba divers due to its naturally sparse distribution and handsome, intricate markings. Although it can reach lengths up to 91 centimetres, mature individuals are more commonly observed around 50 centimetres.

Visually, adult marbled groupers possess a deep, laterally compressed body that reaches its maximum depth at the origin of the dorsal fin. The profile of the head rises steeply and obliquely from a long snout. Adults display a distinctive colouration consisting of a yellowish-brown background covered with numerous small dark brown spots spanning the head, body, and fins, interspersed with pale mottling blotches.
