
The blackfin dartfish (Ptereleotris evides), also widely recognised as the scissortail dartfish or spottail dartfish, is a slender, exquisitely patterned member of the dartfish family (Microdesmidae/Ptereleotridae). Growing to a maximum length of roughly 14 centimetres, this fish exhibits a distinctly elongated, torpedo-like body designed for rapid bursts of propulsion. Its coloration undergoes an impressive transformation throughout its life. Adults display a striking two-tone appearance: the anterior half of the body is a pale bluish-grey or creamy white, which sharply contrasts with the deep charcoal to velvety black posterior half. The dorsal and anal fins are tall, translucent to dusky, and frequently edged in pale blue or white, while the deeply forked caudal fin features bold black margins on both lobes, giving the tail its classic scissored silhouette. Juveniles differ markedly, showcasing a pale body marked with an iridescent blue sheen and a prominent dark spot encircled by blue on the lower base of the caudal fin. Inhabiting coral and rocky reef environments throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, the blackfin dartfish is predominantly observed in monogamous pairs or small, loose aggregations hovering several tens of centimetres above the seabed. Their ecology is intimately bound to the benthos, as each pair or individual maintains one or more shared escape burrows—typically abandoned excavations of alpheid pistol shrimps or worm holes within sand and rubble patches. When feeding, they maintain a head-up posture facing into oncoming currents, effortlessly intercepting passing zooplankton. Despite their delicate, weightless demeanour, they are fiercely alert to predators and changes in water pressure. At the slightest hint of danger, they snap their bodies straight and dart headfirst into their subterranean shelters with astonishing velocity, disappearing completely in the blink of an eye. The Blackfin Dartfish, Ptereleotris evides, is typically observed in pairs, exhibiting a social behaviour characterised by a strong monogamous bond. These active fish are diurnal, spending their days hovering several metres above sandy or rubble bottoms, feeding on zooplankton in the water column. At night or when threatened, they quickly retreat headfirst into the safety of a self-excavated burrow. Regarding reproduction, this species is oviparous, laying eggs. While a specific spawning season is not definitively documented across its entire range, spawning is believed to occur year-round in tropical waters, often peaking during warmer months. They lay demersal eggs within their shared burrow, which are then guarded by both parents. The exact clutch size and incubation period are not precisely known for the species, but post-hatching, larvae are pelagic before settling as juveniles to begin their benthic phase. Sexual maturity is reached at a relatively small size, allowing for multiple reproductive cycles throughout their lifespan. For scuba divers and macro photographers, encountering a pair of blackfin dartfish is a masterclass in patient observation and buoyancy control. These captivating fish are quintessential reef-edge subjects, often found hovering in synchrony over sunny sand patches adjacent to vibrant coral bommies.
