Move with minimal fin disturbance, as the silt and organic sediment characteristic of mangrove floors can instantly ruin visibility if stirred up. Keep your gaze directed upwards towards the water surface and the underside of overhanging foliage, as archerfish typically cruise within the top thirty centimetres of the water column. For underwater photographers, an upward-shooting angle incorporating ambient light filtering through mangrove root systems creates stunning compositional contrasts. Use a wide-angle or macro lens depending on whether you are documenting habitat or hunting behaviour, and set a fast shutter speed (1/250s or higher) to capture the rapid spitting motion. Maintain a respectful distance to avoid spooking the fish from their surface hunting posts.

Best Season

Sightings are generally possible year-round because archerfish occupy stable inshore and estuarine tropical waters. They rely heavily on the tangled prop roots of red mangroves (*Rhizophora* spp.) and shaded overhanging bank vegetation, which provide essential structural shelter from predators as well as a steady supply of terrestrial insect prey.

Diet

Archerfish are specialised, opportunistic carnivores renowned for their remarkable ballistic hunting strategy. Their primary diet consists of terrestrial insects such as crickets, spiders, flies, ants, grasshoppers, and small moths found resting on overhanging vegetation. By pressing their tongue against a specialized groove in the roof of their mouth, they compress their gill covers to shoot high-pressure jets of water up to two metres into the air, knocking targets into the water. In addition to airborne hunting, which occurs predominantly during daylight hours when visual acuity is highest, they feed on aquatic invertebrates, small surface-dwelling crustaceans, and tiny juvenile fish. If prey falls within jumping range, archerfish are also capable of launching their entire bodies clean out of the water to grab targets directly from low-hanging foliage.
