What's the baggage allowance for dive gear on flights?

Most international airlines allow 23kg checked + carry-on. Dive gear is heavy — many divers add a second checked bag (€60-150). Some airlines offer dive-gear allowance.

Dive gear is heavy: a typical full set (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, fins, mask, computer, dive bag) weighs 18-25kg by itself. Add clothing, toiletries, electronics and a camera setup, and you're at 30-40kg total. Standard economy allowance of 23kg is rarely enough.

Solutions in order of cost: (1) Travel light — wear your bulkiest items on the plane (long fins, hooded vest, dive boots can go in your carry-on bag inside a stuff sack), and rent the heavy gear from the boat (BCD and regs are typically €60-100 for the week). (2) Pre-pay an extra checked bag — much cheaper online than at the airport (€60-100 vs €150-250 at check-in). (3) Use a sport equipment allowance — some airlines (Lufthansa, KLM, Emirates, Etihad, Qatar, Turkish, Singapore Airlines) offer a free or discounted dive gear allowance if you book in advance and present proof of certification.

Best airlines for divers: Emirates and Qatar Airways allow up to 30kg in economy and 40kg in business class. Singapore Airlines is dive-friendly. Lufthansa and KLM have specific dive gear add-ons. Avoid budget carriers (Ryanair, easyJet) for international dive trips — their gear surcharges are punitive.

Carry-on essentials (never check these): dive computer, regulator first stage (fragile and expensive), prescription mask, prescription medications, passport, certification cards, phone, camera body and lenses, and one full set of dive clothing in case your checked bag is delayed. Boat operators carry no spare regulators or computers.
