2How a regulator works
A full tank holds air at 200 to 300 bar — hundreds of times the pressure your lungs can handle. The regulator solves that in two steps, which is why it is called a two-stage system.
The first stage clamps onto the tank valve and drops cylinder pressure to an intermediate pressure of roughly 9 to 10 bar above the surrounding water. It also feeds the low-pressure hoses to your octopus and BCD inflator, and a high-pressure hose to your gauge or transmitter. Crucially, it references ambient pressure, so the intermediate pressure rises automatically as you descend.
The second stage is the mouthpiece. When you inhale, a diaphragm flexes inward, tips a lever and opens the valve; air flows until you stop inhaling and the diaphragm returns. Exhaled air leaves through a one-way exhaust valve — the source of your bubbles. The result is air delivered at exactly the pressure of the water around you, at any depth, without you doing anything.
A regulator is also the one piece of kit that must not fail, which is why every set carries a second, independent second stage: the octopus, used to share air with a buddy.

4What this means for your dives
On a liveaboard you will make four or five dives a day for a week, so small differences in breathing effort compound quickly.
- DIN or yoke? DIN screws into the valve and handles high pressures; yoke clamps over it and is still standard in parts of Asia and the Caribbean. Carry a DIN-to-yoke adapter and you can dive anywhere.
- Service before the trip, not on it. Have it serviced at least four weeks out and make a check dive afterwards — a freshly serviced regulator can free-flow before it beds in.
- Cold and depth increase free-flow risk. Thermoclines at 30 m in the tropics are colder than most divers expect; a sealed first stage is worth the money.
- Breathe from the octopus on every dive. A neglected second stage is the one that fails when it is actually needed.
- Rinse in fresh water with the dust cap dry and in place. Water entering the first stage is the most common cause of internal corrosion on multi-day trips.
- Never press the purge button while rinsing — it opens the valve and lets water into the mechanism.
If you rent, check the intermediate pressure and hose condition on the first dive of the trip rather than discovering a problem on a current-swept channel dive on day four.

6Common misconceptions
“All regulators breathe the same.” Balanced designs deliver the same effort at 5 m with a full tank and at 40 m with 50 bar left; unbalanced ones get noticeably harder near the end of a dive.
“Servicing can wait a year or two.” O-rings and seats age whether you dive or not. An annual or 100-dive inspection is the manufacturer's condition for the warranty and, more importantly, for reliability.
“A free-flowing regulator is broken.” Most free-flows are cold or a misadjusted venturi lever. Flip the venturi to the dive position, breathe from it, and it will usually settle — and it is still breathable while it flows.
“Nitrox needs a special regulator.” Up to 40% oxygen, standard modern regulators are supplied nitrox-compatible. Only higher fractions and pure oxygen require dedicated oxygen-clean equipment.

Bring your own if you can. You dive it four or five times a day for a week, and a familiar, well-fitting mouthpiece makes a real difference to jaw fatigue and air consumption. Most boats do carry rental sets as backup.
Can I use my regulator with nitrox?
Yes, up to 40% oxygen with virtually any modern regulator as supplied. Higher fractions or pure oxygen for decompression need oxygen-clean components.
What do I do if my regulator free-flows underwater?
Do not panic — it is still delivering air and you can breathe from it. Switch the venturi lever to the dive position, sip rather than seal your lips around it, signal your buddy and end the dive in a controlled ascent.
