Both are the gentle giants of the sea — colossal filter feeders that pose no threat to divers. But they live in different oceans, look strikingly different up close, and are seen on very different liveaboard itineraries. Here is how to tell them apart and where to find them.

**Spots vs no spots**: Whale sharks have a unique constellation of white spots and stripes on a dark blue-grey body — every individual has a fingerprint-like pattern. Basking sharks are uniformly grey-brown with no markings.
**Gill slits**: Basking shark gill slits are enormous, almost wrapping around the entire head — designed to filter vast volumes of cold water. Whale shark gill slits are short and tucked behind the head.
**Mouth posture**: Basking sharks cruise with mouths gaping wide open, looking like underwater submarines with their jaws extended. Whale sharks usually swim with mouths closed and only open them when actively feeding.
**Water temperature**: If you are in the tropics it is a whale shark; if you are in cold North Atlantic waters it is almost certainly a basking shark.
Both species are obligate filter feeders, but they feed differently. **Whale sharks** can use ram filtration (mouth open while swimming) and active suction feeding — they are surprisingly agile and will chase plankton blooms or fish-egg slicks. **Basking sharks** rely entirely on passive ram filtration, swimming slowly with mouth open through cold, plankton-rich water.
Whale sharks are typically solitary but aggregate at predictable hotspots (Ningaloo, Isla Mujeres). Basking sharks sometimes form courtship lines or breaching groups, especially around the Hebrides in summer.
**Whale sharks** are a tropical liveaboard staple. The Maldives offers year-round encounters in South Ari Atoll. Galápagos liveaboards target large pregnant females at Darwin and Wolf (June–November). Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, Mafia Island in Tanzania, and Cenderawasih Bay in West Papua all have famous seasonal aggregations.
**Basking sharks** are a cold-water encounter, almost exclusively topside or via snorkel. The best opportunities are off the Inner Hebrides of Scotland (Coll, Tiree, Mull) between June and August. They are protected and approaching them on scuba is restricted in many waters.
