The choice between a wetsuit and a drysuit is one of the most consequential gear decisions a diver makes — it affects your comfort, the water you can dive in, your training requirements and how much you spend. The simple rule of thumb is: above 18 °C, a wetsuit usually does the job; below 12 °C, a drysuit is essentially mandatory; the 12–18 °C range is the messy middle where personal tolerance and trip length make the call.

Wetsuits work by trapping a thin layer of water between you and the neoprene, which your body heat warms. They're cheaper, simpler, easier to travel with and require no special training. The downside is heat loss — even thick wetsuits eventually cool you down on long or repeated dives.

A **3 mm wetsuit** is suitable for tropical water (26–30 °C) — Caribbean, Red Sea summer, southeast Asia.
