Single Tank vs Doubles: When to Move to Twin Cylinders

Most recreational divers spend their entire diving lives on a single tank — typically an aluminum 80 — and never need anything else. But for divers exploring deeper wrecks, longer bottom times, technical diving or cave penetration, the move from a single cylinder to **doubles** (also called twins or back-mounted doubles) is one of the most consequential gear changes you'll make. It changes your buoyancy, your weighting, your training requirements and your gas planning entirely.

A **single tank** is the standard recreational rig: one cylinder (commonly aluminum 80) mounted on your BCD with a single first-stage regulator splitting into a second-stage, alternate (octopus) and SPG/computer. Total usable gas is typically around 2,250 L at 207 bar, supporting roughly 45–60 minutes of bottom time at 18 m.

**Doubles** consist of two cylinders connected by a manifold (with isolation valve) and worn on the back via a wing-and-backplate setup. The total gas supply doubles to roughly 4,500–5,500 L. Critically, the manifold provides **gas redundancy** — if one regulator fails, you can isolate that cylinder and still have full gas supply via the other. This is the foundation of tech diving and the primary reason recreational divers move to doubles.

Most recreational divers don't need doubles. The signals that you might:

- You routinely dive past **30 m** or want extended bottom time at depth.

- You're starting **technical diving** (Tec 40, Tec 45, full deco diving).

- You're penetrating **wrecks or caves** where overhead environments require gas redundancy.

- You've experienced an out-of-air or regulator failure and want true redundancy on every dive.

If you're doing 18–25 m reef dives, a single AL80 is sufficient — adding doubles brings weight, complexity and cost without proportional benefit.

Moving to doubles requires formal training. **PADI Tec 40** (or equivalent) introduces back-mounted doubles, manifold management, valve drills (shutting down each post under stress) and fundamental tech-diving skills. Expect 3–4 days of training and 4–6 dives.

Key skills include the **valve drill** (reaching back to shut down each tank in case of regulator free-flow), **gas matching** between buddies, **rule of thirds** gas planning (1/3 in, 1/3 out, 1/3 reserve), and managing the increased weight on the surface and underwater.

A complete doubles setup is significantly more expensive than singles:

- **Steel HP100 doubles** (matched pair): €700–€1,000 used, €1,400–€2,000 new

- **Manifold with isolation valve**: €200–€350

- **Twin-tank wing**: €400–€600

- **Backplate and harness**: €200–€350

- **Two regulators with long hose configuration**: €600–€1,200

- **Tec training**: €700–€1,500

Total: €2,800–€5,000+ to be properly equipped. Sidemount setups cost slightly less because you can use existing single-tank wings adapted for sidemount.

**Sidemount** mounts two tanks at the diver's sides rather than the back. Advantages: reduced back strain, easier transport (carry tanks separately to the entry point), better access to valves (visible at your sides), and superior in tight overhead environments. Disadvantages: more streamlined-trim challenge, requires dedicated harness, and is less common among instructors.

Many cave divers prefer sidemount; many wreck and open-water tech divers prefer back-mounted doubles. Both are equally valid configurations.
