Both are cephalopods — soft-bodied, color-changing, eight-armed (or ten-armed) marvels with the largest brains of any invertebrates. But they live in different ways, hunt differently, and divers usually encounter them in very different conditions. Here is the side-by-side.

**Body shape**: Cuttlefish have an oval, rigid-feeling body framed by a continuous fin that ripples around the perimeter. Octopuses have a fully soft, fluid body with no fins.
**Number of appendages**: Octopuses have 8 arms only. Cuttlefish have 8 arms plus 2 longer feeding tentacles that they normally tuck into pouches and shoot out to grab prey.
**Behavior**: Cuttlefish hover gracefully in mid-water using their fin frill. Octopuses crawl over the substrate or jet sharply between dens. Cuttlefish often produce mesmerizing color-wave displays; octopuses are masters of texture and shape mimicry.
Both groups are extraordinarily intelligent — they pass mirror-recognition variants, solve puzzles, and use tools. Octopus brain-to-body mass ratios rival those of vertebrates.
Both use chromatophores and iridophores in the skin to change color and pattern in milliseconds. Cuttlefish can produce hypnotic 'passing cloud' waves of dark bands rolling across their body to confuse prey or rivals. Octopuses excel at perfect texture mimicry — replicating the exact bumpiness, color and pattern of surrounding rock.
**Octopus muck-diving capitals**: **Lembeh Strait** (Indonesia) is home to the mimic octopus, blue-ringed, wonderpus, coconut octopus and many more. **Anilao** (Philippines), **Tulamben** (Bali) and the Mediterranean coast also offer reliable encounters with the common octopus.
**Cuttlefish hotspots**: The annual giant Australian cuttlefish aggregation at **Whyalla, South Australia** (May–August) is a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle — tens of thousands of cuttlefish gather to mate. **Lembeh** is excellent for flamboyant cuttlefish and dwarf species. **Cabilao** in the Philippines and the **Red Sea** also host healthy populations.
Most octopus and cuttlefish species are Data Deficient or Least Concern, but populations face mounting pressure from intensive fisheries (especially Mediterranean and West African octopus, and East Asian cuttlefish bone trade). Habitat loss in seagrass beds is a particular concern for cuttlefish.
