Green Turtle vs Hawksbill Turtle: How to Identify the Two Most Common Reef Turtles

On almost any tropical reef dive you will see a sea turtle gliding past. Most of the time it is one of these two: a green turtle grazing seagrass or a hawksbill picking sponges from coral. They are easy to confuse from a distance and easy to identify up close.

**Beak**: This is the dead giveaway. Hawksbills have a long, narrow, hooked beak (hence the name). Greens have a short, blunt beak with a serrated lower jaw for ripping seagrass.

**Carapace pattern**: Hawksbill scutes overlap like roof tiles and have intricate amber and dark-brown 'tortoiseshell' patterning — historically the source of decorative tortoiseshell. Green turtle scutes lie flat against each other (non-overlapping) and the pattern is more uniform olive/brown.

**Behavior**: Greens are often seen lying on the sand or grazing motionless on seagrass beds. Hawksbills are typically active, weaving through coral picking at sponges and anemones.

**Greens** are the only sea turtle that switches to a fully herbivorous diet as adults — they graze seagrass meadows so intensively they shape entire ecosystems. The 'green' refers to the green-tinted body fat (from chlorophyll), not the shell color.

**Hawksbills** are sponge specialists. Many sponges contain chemical toxins that few animals can tolerate; hawksbills can. By controlling sponges they help fast-growing corals compete for reef space.

**Greens**: **Sipadan** (Borneo) is famous for dozens-per-dive encounters. **Mnemba Atoll** (Zanzibar), **Apo Reef** (Philippines), **Akumal** (Mexico) and **Honokowai** (Maui) all host reliable populations.

**Hawksbills**: **Maldives** house reefs, **Bonaire**, **Misool/Raja Ampat**, **Komodo** and the **Red Sea** all feature regular hawksbill encounters. Critical nesting sites include the Seychelles, Solomon Islands and Eastern Pacific Caribbean.

**Green turtle**: IUCN Endangered. Threatened by bycatch, plastic ingestion, light pollution at nesting beaches, and historic harvesting for meat.

**Hawksbill turtle**: IUCN Critically Endangered. Centuries of hunting for tortoiseshell decimated populations; bycatch and reef habitat loss continue the pressure.
