Choosing between aluminum and steel scuba cylinders affects your weighting, buoyancy behavior, travel logistics and trim — sometimes more than divers realize. Tropical resort divers often never think about it because rental shops stock standard aluminum 80s (the AL80, by far the most common cylinder worldwide). But once you start owning your own gear, diving cold water, or planning longer dives, the cylinder material matters.
**Aluminum tanks** are softer, lighter on land, and almost universally available as the iconic AL80 (11.1 L, 3000 psi/207 bar). They're also the standard rental cylinder at virtually every dive operation in the tropics. The catch: aluminum is positively buoyant when empty, meaning your trim shifts during the dive as you breathe down the tank.
**Steel tanks** come in many sizes (LP72, HP80, HP100, HP120 and beyond), are denser and stronger, and stay slightly negatively buoyant even when empty. This makes them more popular with cold-water divers (less lead needed), tech divers (consistent trim) and anyone diving with heavy exposure suits. Steel is heavier on land and requires more careful internal inspection to prevent rust.

An AL80 starts the dive about 1.5 kg negative (full of compressed air) and ends the dive about 2 kg positive (empty). That's a **3.5 kg swing** over the course of a dive — meaning you have to compensate by adding air to your BCD or wing as the tank lightens. For experienced divers this is manageable; for new divers it's the source of many ascent control problems.
Steel tanks have a smaller swing (typically 2.5–3 kg) because the cylinder itself stays negative even when empty. This produces more **consistent trim** through the dive and is one reason tech divers strongly prefer steel doubles.
If you switch from an AL80 to a steel HP100 in a 7 mm wetsuit, you can typically remove **2–3 kg of lead** from your weight belt because the steel cylinder is heavier. This both saves your back on the surface and improves trim underwater. Steel also tends to be slightly shorter and fatter for equivalent capacity, which can position the center of mass slightly lower for better horizontal trim.
Downside: steel is **heavier on land**. Lugging an HP120 to the boat dock is a workout. Aluminum is friendlier for shore diving and resort dive trips.
Both materials require **annual visual inspection (VIP)** and **hydrostatic testing every 5 years** (5-year rule in most countries). Aluminum tanks rarely develop internal corrosion since they don't rust, but pitting from prolonged saltwater exposure can fail VIP.
Steel tanks must be **kept dry inside** to prevent rust. Operators that fill steel tanks with damp air or fill while wet can ruin a cylinder in a few years. Properly maintained steel tanks last 30+ years; aluminum tanks should be retired around 25 years (some agencies recommend 15).
Aluminum 80s are the global rental standard. Walk into any dive shop from Bonaire to Bali and you'll get an AL80 unless you ask for something specific.
Steel cylinders are rarely available for rent abroad. Cold-water destinations (Norway, UK, Pacific Northwest) usually offer steel; tropical destinations almost never do. If you prefer steel, you'll need to own your own tanks or accept aluminum on tropical trips.
