Location: Raja Ampat
About Epica
Operating within the diverse marine ecosystems of Raja Ampat, the Epica offers focused exploration for up to 12 guests.
The geological collision that formed West Papua's coastline also created an underwater world of immense complexity. In the region known as Raja Ampat, over 1,500 islands interrupt the flow of major oceanic currents, forcing water through a maze of channels and shallow seas. This unique hydrography has fostered one of the most concentrated marine ecosystems on Earth, a global center for coral and fish diversity. Life flourishes at every scale, from macro critters on vibrant soft corals to congregations of oceanic manta rays in nutrient-rich passages. The 24-meter Epica is designed for this environment, offering small groups a platform to navigate these intricate and life-filled waters.
Diving operations are organized for efficiency and access to remote sites. Two 3.5-meter tenders, powered by 15hp Yamaha outboards, transport divers to specific reef points, mangrove forests, and current-swept channels that larger vessels cannot approach. The main vessel's dive deck provides a functional area for kitting up and storing equipment in personal stations. All underwater excursions are led by local guides with extensive knowledge of the area’s topography, currents, and marine life. They ensure each dive is conducted safely while maximizing opportunities to find the region's signature species.
Life aboard Epica is simple and community-oriented. The vessel accommodates a maximum of 12 guests in six straightforward cabins, all sharing two well-maintained bathrooms. This arrangement fosters a social atmosphere among a small group of like-minded travelers. Indoor common areas include a salon that doubles as a dining room, offering a comfortable space to relax. Outside, shaded decking provides a place to enjoy the sea breeze, while an upper sun deck is available for observing the passing island scenery and for unwinding between underwater activities.
The onboard culinary program provides fresh, hearty meals that fuel an active diving schedule. A dedicated chef prepares a varied menu combining local Indonesian flavors with familiar international dishes. Meals are served family-style in the indoor salon, creating a relaxed dining atmosphere. Throughout the day, guests have access to complimentary water, tea, and coffee. The crew can accommodate most special dietary requirements with sufficient advance notification.
Built in 2016, Epica is a 24-meter motor vessel constructed to navigate Indonesia’s varied sea conditions. Its design prioritizes reliability and function for dive-focused expeditions. Power is provided by a single Mitsubishi 200p engine, ensuring consistent transit between the scattered islands of the Raja Ampat archipelago. With a capacity limited to 12 guests, the vessel maintains an intimate feel throughout the journey. Its size allows it to access smaller bays and anchorages, bringing divers closer to the action while providing a stable base for exploration.
Epica operates classic itineraries throughout Raja Ampat, with routes designed to showcase the region's famous biodiversity. Depending on the season and conditions, trips may explore the current-rich Dampier Strait, known for its large fish schools and manta cleaning stations, or the dramatic soft coral gardens of the southern islands. The primary diving season runs from October through April, taking advantage of calmer surface conditions. Trips depart from and return to the port of Sorong. This liveaboard is best suited for experienced, adventurous divers who value a destination-focused experience and a small-group dynamic over extensive onboard amenities.
