About this route

This expedition takes you to the remote reefs of Wakatobi and the vibrant walls of Buton, exploring an area celebrated for its exceptional biodiversity and pristine coral ecosystems. Expect encounters with a wide array of reef fish, macro life, and healthy hard and soft corals, alongside the possibility of larger pelagics in deeper sections. The Wakatobi atolls offer stunning reefscapes and clear waters, while Buton's nutrient-rich currents often attract schooling fish and provide diverse critter habitats. This route is designed for divers seeking a comprehensive exploration of Indonesia's secluded southeastern Sulawesi waters, combining both colorful reef dives and exhilarating drift dives.

Day-by-day plan

  1. Day 1: Embarkation in Kendari

    Kendari, Sulawesi

Board the vessel in Kendari harbour in the afternoon. After settling in, you will receive boat and safety briefings followed by dinner as the journey begins overnight towards the first dive locations.

Good to know: Embarkation is typically scheduled around 13:00. The vessel usually departs port in the evening.

  2. Day 2: Wakatobi Check Dives

    Wakatobi National Park

The day begins with a check dive to ensure all equipment is in order and to acclimate to the local conditions. This is followed by up to three more dives, offering a full introduction to the area's rich marine biodiversity.

Good to know: Total dive count is dependent on conditions and travel time from port.

  3. Day 3: Exploring Wangi-Wangi

    Wangi-Wangi Islands, Wakatobi

Exploration focuses on the reefs around the Wangi-Wangi Islands, which present varied underwater landscapes from sloping coral gardens to sheer walls. Today's dives may include sites like the Gunung Waha pinnacle, which attracts schooling jacks and fusiliers.

Dive sites: Gunung Waha, Waha Top

Good to know: A typical full day includes three day dives and one sunset or night dive.

  4. Day 4: Pinnacles and Ridges

    Wakatobi National Park

Diving continues around submerged sea mounts and ridges teeming with life. Dives at sites such as Roma reveal a submerged pinnacle covered in dense corals, while careful searching may uncover well-camouflaged scorpionfish and ribbon eels.

    Dive sites: Roma, Mari Mabuk

Good to know: Currents along exposed ridges often concentrate large schools of reef fish.

  5. Day 5: Tomea's Prolific Reefs

    Tomea Island, Wakatobi

The cruise continues to Tomea Island, an area noted for its excellent coral health and fish populations. Dives along steep walls and ridges like Ali Reef are often visited by turtles, schooling snappers, and circulating jacks.

Dive sites: Ali Reef, Table Coral City

Good to know: Up to four dives are scheduled, weather and conditions permitting.

  6. Day 6: Walls, Fans, and Buton Critters

    Buton Island Area

The itinerary moves towards Buton, offering a mix of dramatic reef scenery and distinctive critter diving. Dives may feature walls decorated with massive sea fans at sites like Fan 38, or muck dives in sandy bays known for unusual macro subjects.

Dive sites: Fan 38, Fan Garden

Good to know: This day often showcases the region's diversity, from large pelagics to tiny critters.

  7. Day 7: Final Dives and Cruise to Port

    Bau Bau Area

Enjoy two final morning dives to conclude the trip’s underwater exploration, potentially at a site like Magnifica Reef. Following the dives, the boat will begin its cruise towards the final port of Bau Bau, anchoring there for the night.

    Dive sites: Magnifica Reef

Good to know: Guests should observe a 24-hour no-fly period after their last dive.
